While Levi\u2019s jeans carried labels claiming that they were made &#8220;responsibly&#8221; and the brand has stated on its website that it has \u201calways stood up for what\u2019s right\u201d, CCC, however, argues that the reality is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCC pointed to the \u00d6zak factory in \u015eanl\u0131urfa, manufacturing for Levi\u2019s, where it said that working conditions deteriorated significantly after management failed to take workers\u2019 personal circumstances into account following the earthquake. The devastating earthquake that struck south-eastern T\u00fcrkiye in February 2023 killed more than 50,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLevi\u2019s promised its consumers that its jeans are responsibly made and they stand up for what\u2019s right. But I saw the reality is different,\u201d said Bego Demir, founder of CCC T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-workers-manufacturing-for-levi-s-punished-over-union-activity-and-protests\">\u201cWorkers manufacturing for Levi\u2019s punished over union activity and protests\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CCC argues that workers in T\u00fcrkiye producing jeans for Levi Strauss were punished for joining a new trade union and taking part in peaceful protests demanding better pay and working conditions. \u201cProvincial security forces tear-gassed, beat, pepper-sprayed and detained these workers. In retaliation, the factory management fired all 400 protesters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCC underlined that Levi\u2019s, as the only buyer in the factory, has significant influence over working conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLevi&#8217;s initially acknowledged that the events violated their code of conduct, but never followed through on requests made by workers and their representatives for reinstatement or compensation for the fired workers,\u201d CCC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case has drawn attention to the need for a transformation towards a fairer and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.textilegence.com\/en\/category\/green-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainable<\/a> production system that centres workers\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its forthcoming manifesto \u201cFashioning a Just Transition\u201d, CCC calls for a ban on greenwashing and social washing, as well as stronger protection for workers\u2019 freedom to organise in independent trade unions.
