The SA8000 Social Standard, developed by Social Accountability International<\/a> (SAI), has provided a framework since 1997 for organizations across all industries and countries to demonstrate their commitment to fair and humane working c<\/a>o<\/a>nditions<\/a> and the highest standards of social accountability. The importance of the standard for the textile industry was recently highlighted during a training session organized under UT\u0130B’s \u201cUR-GE Project for Enhancing Social Compliance Capacity and Environmental Capability in the Textile Industry and Increasing Exports” supported by the Turkish Ministry of Trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, Serap T\u00fcmen, Technical Manager at INTERTEK T\u00fcrkiye and SA8000 Senior Lead Auditor, provided detailed information on the core principles of the SA8000 Social Standard, the certification process, and the benefits it offers companies. She also explained how businesses operating in global markets can meet the requirements of SA8000 certification, emphasizing its advantages, including enhanced corporate reputation, a more reliable supply chain, and improved productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSA8000 strengthens the relationship between employees and management\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting the role of SA8000 in enhancing corporate reputation, T\u00fcmen said: \u201cSA8000 is regarded as one of the cornerstones of growth in line with international standards. It strengthens confidence in management systems while increasing worker productivity, ultimately contributing to higher profitability. By prioritizing workers’ rights, occupational health and safety, and employee well-being, the system aims to support sustainable development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about the history of the standard, she said: \u201cSA8000 is a voluntary certification system that provides safeguards against issues such as child labour and forced labour. The certification process consists of a two-stage audit. Companies are thoroughly assessed, and those that successfully meet the requirements are awarded SA8000 certification. The standard helps strengthen the relationship between employees and management while creating a more productive and prestigious working environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the training, participants also examined the structure and responsibilities of the Social Performance Team, one of the key elements of the SA8000 Standard. \u201cThe Social Performance Team identifies workplace risks and helps establish mechanisms to address systemic issues affecting organisational performance. By identifying risks and uncovering factors that negatively affect the system, the Social Performance Team helps create a solution-oriented structure. This enables organizations to build a system capable of continuous self-improvement and development,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About SA8000<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Developed by Social Accountability International (SAI) as the world’s first credible social certification standard, SA8000 is based on internationally recognized decent work principles, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions, and national labour legislation. Rather than relying on checklist-style audits, SA8000 adopts a management systems approach to social performance, placing continuous improvement at the centre of the certification process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS) provides oversight of the SA8000 programme to ensure quality and reduce risk. Only SA8000 certificates issued by certification bodies accredited by SAAS are recognized by stakeholders as credible evidence of social performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, SA8000 protects more than 2.8 million workers across over 5,000 certified facilities worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n

Emphasizing \u201crespect\u201d in the 2026 revision of SA8000<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In SA8000:2026, Social Accountability International (SAI) has placed greater emphasis on the concept of “respect” in relation to wages and working hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SA8000 defines “respect” in line with the approach outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs): companies should avoid causing or contributing to harm and address any harm they cause, contribute to, or are directly linked to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, the standard highlights that paying workers wages that are insufficient to support a decent standard of living or requiring them to work unreasonable hours prevents people from fully enjoying their fundamental rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies are expected to use their influence to address external factors where necessary<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAI acknowledges that organizations may face genuine structural barriers when seeking to meet these two requirements. In such cases, organizations are expected to take all feasible actions within their own operations. However, if this alone is not sufficient, they are expected to engage externally, use their influence, and seek to create greater leverage to help change the conditions they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples include challenging buyers regarding unrealistic pricing and delivery deadlines, working with local authorities to expand public services that reduce workers\u2019 living costs, or collaborating with other companies in the same industry to address shared challenges that cannot be solved individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To obtain or maintain certification, an organization must fully meet the requirements of the Standard through its own actions. However, some flexibility may be allowed for minor issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where an organization is not the sole cause of a problem and significant external factors also contribute, certification may continue as long as the company can demonstrate that it has robust systems in place to manage risks and is making genuine progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key requirements for certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

SAI recently published Communication No. 3: Wage and Working Hours Expectations, which provides further guidance on how auditors should assess these two areas under the framework of Procedure 200 Addendum. To benefit from such an extended timeline for improvement, an organization particularly needs to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regularly benchmark wages and working hours against robust and reliable standards and keep this analysis up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly assess its own resources \u2014 including what it has available and what can reasonably be reallocated \u2014 to help close the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provide concrete evidence of external factors that make it difficult to close the gap through its own efforts alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
