
One of Turkey’s rapidly developing textile segments, socks market increased its power in export. The sock manufacturers reached to 1,04 billion dollars worth by increasing their total exports 1,1% in 2016. The sector’s export became 77,1 million dollars with 1,5% increase on January 2017.
Comparing to the previous years, while socks export was 1,23 billion dollars in 2014, it regressed to 1,3 billion dollars by decreasing 15,9 in 2015. On the quantity basis it is seen that 1,6 billon pairs of socks were exported in 2016. In 2015, considering the sock export, the quantity increase is estimated as 8,3%. On January of 2017, 129,1 billion pairs of socks were exported, this meant 0,5% increase compared to the previous years.
In 2016 the share of sock export in total garment and ready-wear export is escalated as 6,1%. This share was 6,5% in 2014 and 6,1% in 2015. On January of 2017 this rate became 6,2% with a small increase.
In 2016, the countries that Turkey exported socks the most were listed as England, Germany, France, Spain and Netherlands. The sock export to England which is in the first place, became 252,4 million dollars with 12,3 decrease. The export to Germany which is in the second place, gained 225,6 million worth with 7,6% increase.
Last year’s three most exported socks
Last year’s three most exported sock types were cotton socks with 633,5 million dollars export and socks from synthetic fibers with 88,6 million dollar and cotton tights with 90,3 million dollars. In 2016 there was an increase among the four most exported sock types and decrease among the six types out of ten. The product with the most export increase was synthetic fibers sock with 7,1% rise while the tights made from other fibers suitable for weaving experienced 18,8% decrease.
