Insulation inspired by NASA: Aersulate on the scene at Heimtextil

Outlast Technologies will present a breakthrough in thermal insulation at Heimtextil 2026 in Frankfurt on January 13-16: Aersulate® Wadding, the next generation of fiber-based insulation inspired by NASA technology. Vistors will be able to discover this solution that offers innovation and sustainability at the same time in Hall 4.0 at Booth E59.

At the heart of this innovation lies aerogel – the world’s lightest solid, consisting of up to 99% air. By embedding an impressive 50% by volume of aerogel directly into viscose fibers, Outlast has engineered an insulation material that is both exceptionally light and extraordinarily effective. The result: 35% higher RCT values (Resistance to Dry Heat Transfer = indicator for insulation performance) compared to conventional solutions.

What makes Aersulate® waddings special is that manufacturers can now produce winter quilts with summer-like lightness or summer quilts that feel almost weightless.

In conventional waddings, the fiber layers are compressed during the quilting process. As a result, the air trapped within the wadding escapes – and with it, the most important insulating element. The insulation performance is significantly reduced.

In contrast, Aersulate® waddings retain air securely within the porous structure of the fibers, ensuring that it remains effective even after further processing steps. This means that performance and insulation capability are maintained over time.

The ultra-thin material is also ideal for sleeping bags, as it delivers reliable thermal performance even when compressed by the sleeper’s body weight. Moisture likewise has little effect on this innovative insulation. While conventional waddings typically suffer a noticeable loss in performance when exposed to humidity, Aersulate® maintains its efficiency thanks to its smart structural design.

Whether used in quilts or sleeping bags, Aersulate® provides dependable warmth at minimal weight

Innovation and sustainability go hand in hand in Aersulate® Wadding. By merging aerogel made from quartz sand with renewable, wood-based viscose, Aersulate® Wadding offers a sustainable, animal-free alternative to down and synthetic fills – with uncompromised performance.

With its patent-pending fiber technology, Outlast Technologies redefines textile insulation: thin, light, and powerful. Aersulate® opens new possibilities where conventional waddings reach their limits – setting a new standard for high-performance, sustainable insulation.
