Low Increase in the Value of Exports While the Course Remains the Same

Low increase in the value of exports while the course remains the same; in 2018, the Turkish textile industry grew by 4% to 10.5 billion dollars through exports, while the garment industry grew by 3.6% to 17.6 billion dollars. Classic export markets maintained their importance while the growth rate remained below the overall Turkish export.

Driving forces of the Turkish economy, textile and garment exports increased in 2018. According to the data of İTHİB (Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters ‘Association) and İHKİB (Istanbul Apparel Exporters’ Association), textile and raw materials industry closed 2018 with 10.5 billion dollars in exports with a 4% increase. The garment and apparel industry completed exports with a 3.6% increase and 17.6 billion dollars in revenue. However last year, Turkey’s overall exports rose 7.1% to 168.1 billion dollars. According to these figures, growth in both the textile and the apparel industry exports were under the Turkish overall export ratio. The share of textile industry in overall exports in 2018 was 5.7%, while the share of garment was 10.5%.

Low increase in the value of exports, the problem of value-adding to exports continues

The textile industry achieved an increase of 4% in exports in 2018, and increased its exports on quantity basis by 6.1% to 2.3 million tons. Similarly, the garment industry continues to encounter the problem of value-adding to exports as well. In 2018, the exports unit price of garment and apparel industry decreased by 3.3% to 14.5 dollars per kg compared to the previous year.

EU continues to be the main market for Turkish manufacturers

The most important export market for Turkish producers continued to be the EU region. Both textile and raw materials and garment and apparel sectors realized half of their exports to this region. The textile industry’s exports to 28 EU countries increased by 1.1% to 5.4 billion dollars last year. 51.3% of the industry’s exports are made to EU countries. The second and third markets for the textile manufacturers were African and Middle Eastern countries with 1 billion dollars of exports.

In 2018, top three countries that Turkey have realized apparel and garment exports were Germany, Spain and the UK. Last year exports to Germany decreased by 0.9% to 3.2 billion dollars, exports to Spain increased by 15% to 2.4 billion dollars, while exports to the UK increased by 3.6% to 2 billion dollars. These three countries are followed by the Netherlands, France, Iraq, USA, Italy, Denmark and Israel.

Woven fabrics and knitted clothing were the largest export products

The most important product group of the textile industry in exports was woven fabrics with a share of 23.8%. Compared to 2017, the export of woven fabrics in 2018 increased by 1.7% to 2.5 billion dollars. The second important export item of the industry was composed by the yarn group with 18.3%. Yarn exports increased by 4% last year up to 1.9 billion dollars. Home textile products, the 3rd most important product group with a share of 15.3%, achieved a value of 1.6 billion dollars with a decrease of 1.3%.

The most important product group of apparel and garment industry in exports was knitted clothing. Exports of this product group increased by 2.4% compared to the previous year and reached 9.1 billion dollars. Exports of the second most important export product, woven apparel increased by 5.8% to 6.3 billion dollars. Exports of other ready-made goods, including home textile products, increased by 1.9% to 2 billion dollars.

Turkey’s apparel related industry exports in 2018 reached 757 million dollars with an increase of 16.7%. In this group, interlinings and similar items have an export share of 66%. Exports of these products increased by 24.4% last year to 503 million dollars. The second important product group consisted of zipper, clasp, buckle, etc. with 11% share. Exports of these products increased by 0.3% to 83 million dollars. The biggest market in the apparel related industry was the US. Exports to this market increased by 36.8% to 70 million dollars.

In December 2018, the capacity utilization rate of textile products was 76.7%, which showed a decline of 5.5% compared to the previous year. Capacity utilization in the garment manufacturing industry was 80.7% in the same month. This means a reduction of 0.7% compared to the previous year.

Carpet export increased by 4.7%

One of the world’s major carpet manufacturers and exporters, Turkey increased exports by 4.7% in 2018 to 2.2 billion dollars. So the carpet exports share in Turkey’s total exports 1.4%. The main product amongst the product group with 84.5% was the machine-woven carpet. The tuft carpet, which has a share of 13.2% in total carpet exports, achieved a 15% increase in exports. However, hand carpet exports decreased by 8.7%. In 2018, the most important country groups in carpet exports were Middle Eastern countries, American countries and EU countries.
