Mexican textile market growing with an export focus

Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America, is also the world’s 15th largest economy. As of 2018, the country has a GDP of 1.199 trillion dollars and a population of 123.5 million. Mexico, which has continued to develop trade ties with both North and South America; has taken steps to reduce the restrictions on imports in recent years.

Textile and clothing industries of NAFTA member Mexico are growing rapidly thanks to the huge demand of their neighbour USA. This growth is triggered by export markets more than the domestic market. In 2017, Mexico’s textile and apparel exports reached 28.6 billion dollars. Almost half of this exports is to the United States. This is followed by South African countries, Asia and Europe.

Textile and apparel industry constitutes 6% of the country’s gross domestic product. A close look at the textile industry in Mexico shows it to be an important branch of employment. 20% of the country’s 53 million employment force is in the textile and apparel industry. After the 2000s, Mexico lost few steps in exports and has gone on its way with specialization and diversification; facing the rapid and cheap production of China. Fiber, filter, air cushion, seat cover and special leather manufacturers are noteworthy.
